CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO
Turning his attention to the phone, he dialed the last number heâd memorized for Nathan. If Nathan didnât answer, heâd try Logan next.
âHello?â Nathan greeted on the first ring.
âHey,â Asher said.
Something clattered, and Asher pictured Nathan knocking something to the ground as he rose abruptly. The noise could have been something else entirely, but that image was what formed in his head.
âAsher,â Nathan breathed. âWhere have you been?â
âI canât reveal that.â
âWhy not?â
âI said I wouldnât.â
There was a pause as Nathan absorbed this. âAre you okay?â
âYes. Iâm here by choice, but I canât reveal where⦠yet. Hopefully, Iâll be able to do so soon.â
Asher held Brieâs gaze as she stared at him from across the way. He couldnât read the expression on her face, but at least she wasnât glaring at him.
âAnd how do I know youâre telling the truth when you say youâre okay?â Nathan asked.
âBecause I was given a chance to call you, and Iâve been offered the opportunity to leave, but Iâm staying. I may have stumbled upon something to help us all, and Iâm not going to leave it.â
Is that the only reason heâs staying? Brie wondered and then kicked herself in the ass for thinking it. Who cared why he was staying? Not her, not at all, not even a little bit.
And she was completely lying to herself. She was aware of that, but it didnât stop her from repeating the lie a couple more times.
She should be pissed at him for causing a problem sheâd never seen coming. Sheâd expected him to somehow mess up their hunt for the stone, get in the way, try to keep it for himself, or attempt an escape.
The possibility the demons might somehow link the two of them together had never occurred to her. But then, she hadnât expected to end up in jail either. All she could do was hope that one vamp was the only one who saw Asher and most likely her picture too.
Asher didnât tell Nathan the other reason he wasnât going to leave was because of Brie. It would only irritate Brie, but it was the truth.
Not only that, but he was beginning to question if the strong pull he felt toward her wasnât something more than just an intense, physical attraction. Heâd seen too many vampire and hunter mates come together over the years not to question the force of his attraction to her.
It didnât seem like Brie was questioning it. Maybe sheâd never been around mated vampires before, or, if she had, it had been so rare she hadnât started to speculate whether it might be happening between them.
But then, she was so closed off she might have started to suspect what they were to each other and refused to acknowledge it. Or a worse possibility was she wasnât experiencing the same level of attraction to him as he was to her.
He found that unlikely given what passed between them earlier, but it could be a crushing possibility.
âIs there something we can do to help you?â Nathan asked.
